"The People of
Palm Sunday"
Every Easter we
hear the same story perhaps told a little differently, but this Sunday the
pastor brought up an interesting point. Who were the people in the
crowd that first Palm Sunday, and what were they "looking" for. After
hearing the "Palm Sunday" story over and over again we focus on everyone
shouting "Hosanna, Hosanna" as they put palm branches on the ground. Let's
take a deeper look.
Some in the crowd
were there seeking a political type of figure to get their lives in order.
Others heard of Jesus' healings and were looking for a Holy man to heal
them as leprosy was at a peak at this time. Some heard Jesus to be the
great prophet and just wanted to see him, while others lark in the back
ground of the crowd hiding and watching carefully as they considered Jesus
to be a dangerous radical.
But it would be the
same as if Jesus were to appear today to talk to a town. People would be
there for different reasons. Christians would be there to see their
savior. Believers and non-believers alike would be there to be healed or
to witness a miracle. But there would still be those larking in the back
wondering and seeing but still not believing. And the politicians of our
country, what would they be thinking? I'm sure they would be wondering how
this would effect our government, the people, and their position.
Whether that first
Palm Sunday or today, most had "Hope in Jesus." They were looking to find
hope in this man called Jesus. |
